Since the topic of the upcoming public hearing is technically zoning perhaps the Commissioners could use this forum to allow discussion of a vacation rental home ban in the area. Given the environmental damage caused by building these massive rental homes and the noise resulting from the large groups of transient and drunken occupants of these homes a ban or other regulation may be in order to protect full-time residents of the county. Countless cases of illegal drug use and drunken driving by those using these short-term rentals also add merit to the case for more stringent regulation of these rental properties. Such bans have already been put in place in popular vacation destinations in California, Florida and Hawaii. Maybe it is time for Garrett County's true residents to take a stand against the exploitation of the land, the noise, the illegal drugs and the drunken driving that endangers us all.
