A new coal-fired power plant and a new lake?

The Cumberland Times-News reports on the ongoing discussions for energy development in the Casselman Basin. It should be interesting to see how this evolves.

From the news feed at the bottom of the page I can see that the story even made CNNMoney.com today.

Don't forget to check back to Dan's Deep Creek Blog for future updates.

HAHAHA....because there is nothing like vacationing next to a coal mine and a coal-fired power plant! If this happens I think I'll call off my vacation to Chernobyl and go to Garrett County instead!

Thanks for your comment BM, but the people of Garrett County have long embraced coal as a way of life even with the pollution and acid rain. For that reason I have a feeling this won't cause the same uproar that the wind turbines did and people will just continue to maintain the status quo as far as coal goes. Anything that involves change and could potentially upset the way of life in anyway is viewed as much more of a threat.

Using the coal to get access to the natural gas is a novel idea though. Then I guess the question is what do you really gain in the process and what other pollutants are going to be spewed into the air even if the CO2 goes underground?

If you didn't realize it Garrett County already suffers from some of the poorest air quality in the Eastern United States thanks to all the coal-fired plants in the Ohio Valley (see link below where low numbers represent the poorest air quality). Making a bad situation even worse is never a good idea in my opinion.
