You'll notice that the writer used 2010 census data as the source of data. After reading this, I immediately asked myself what the 2010 census data would show for Garrett County's vacancy rate. The answer, just over 36% of Garrett County housing units are reported to be vacant (6,797 out of 18,854). The numbers in Swanton and Sang Run are significantly higher (1,407 vacant out of 2,182 housing units in Swanton [64% vacant] and 1,985 vacant out of 2,931 housing units in Sang Run [68% vacant]).
No wonder some of the locals (bears) are setting up residence.

Of course, the reason why so many Garrett County homes are vacant is that they are second homes. This statistic is almost meaningless unless you compare it to an area where there are a lot of second homes.
Doesn't Florida also have a lot of second homes?
Even I was shocked to see that nearly 70% of McHenry housing units are only occupied on a transient basis.
